1. Who we are
Spleven is developed by Marbot Apps to help travelers manage, split, and sync group expenses. Your data is stored securely on servers in Switzerland.
Questions or deletion requests? Contact us here.
2. What data we collect and why
| Data type | What we collect | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Personal info | Name, email | Account identification, syncing |
| Group & expense data | Group titles, expenses, participants, currencies | Core functionality |
| Device info | Device ID, language, app version | Diagnostics, syncing |
| Usage data | Anonymous feature usage (via Firebase Analytics) | App improvement |
| Contacts (optional) | Access to contact list (only when sharing groups) | Invite participants, sync across users |
| Camera (optional) | QR code scanning (only when chosen by user) | Share/sync groups with other devices |
We do not collect payment credentials, health data, or sensitive identifiers. We do not use your data for advertising.
Signing in with Google: if you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with Spleven through Firebase Authentication. We use your name and email address to identify your account and to sync your groups across your devices, and store them on our servers in Switzerland. Your profile picture is only shown in the app on your device and is never stored on our servers. We access no other data in your Google account, never sell it or use it for advertising, and share it with no third party.
3. Data storage and security
- All personal and group data is stored exclusively on secure servers in Switzerland.
- Data is transmitted securely using HTTPS (TLS).
- We apply strict access controls and technical safeguards.
4. Data sharing
- We do not share or sell your personal data to third parties.
- We use Google Analytics for Firebase to analyze anonymized app usage only. No personal or financial data is shared.
5. Your rights and controls
- You can delete your account in the app (Settings › Synchronization › Delete account in the Android app; menu › your email address › Delete account on the web) or by email — see Delete account. This erases your account, email address, name, sign-in and device registrations, and removes your email address from the participants of your groups. Groups are not deleted: they stay with the people you shared them with, and a group nobody uses any more is removed later.
- Local app data is removed by uninstalling the app.
- We retain data only as long as necessary for sync and recovery.
6. Data transfers
Your personal data is stored and processed only in Switzerland. Anonymous usage data (via Google Analytics) may be processed by Google under their own privacy practices.
7. Children's privacy
This app is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from minors.
8. Permissions used
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Internet | Required for syncing and backup |
| Contacts (optional) | To invite contacts for group sharing (only when initiated by user) |
| Camera (optional) | To scan QR codes for syncing or sharing (only when triggered by user) |
| Account (optional) | For Google login (optional) |
9. Spleven Web
Spleven Web (web.spleven.com) is the browser version of Spleven. It syncs with the same servers in Switzerland, and everything above applies to it too, except where this section says otherwise.
- Stored in your browser: the groups you opened in it, a copy of their data and pictures for offline reading, the exchange rates, and your settings (home currency, language, usage statistics choice). Signing out removes the groups, their copies and pictures, and the home currency from the browser. Clearing the site's data in your browser removes everything.
- No account needed: you can use the web version without signing in. If you sign in, Firebase Authentication (Google) handles your email address or Google account, as in the app.
- Usage statistics only if you agree: on your first visit, a banner asks whether the browser may send usage statistics to Google Analytics for Firebase. Until you choose Accept, no analytics code is loaded, nothing is sent to Google Analytics and no analytics cookie is set. If you accept, we record which screens are opened and these actions: joining a group, creating a group, saving a payment, signing in and installing the web app. We never send a group's identifier, a name, an amount, other group content or the address of the page you are on. Google Analytics then stores the cookies
_gaand_ga_GFK0XXE1SXand a Firebase installation ID in your browser. Google signals and ad personalisation are off. You can change your choice at any time in Settings; turning it off stops all sending and deletes the analytics cookies and the installation ID. - Server logs: our web server logs each request (IP address, time, requested address, browser type). We use these logs only to count daily visitors, and they are deleted after a short period.
10. Spleven for iPhone
Spleven for iPhone syncs with the same servers in Switzerland as the Android app. Everything above applies to it too, except where this section says otherwise.
- What is synced: the same data as in the Android app: your account (email address, name; Firebase Authentication handles your email, Google or Apple sign-in) and your groups with their participants, payments, categories, payment methods, exchange rates and pictures. A picture you add to a person, a group or a payment is resized on your iPhone, uploaded and stored with the group, so everyone in the group can see it.
- On your iPhone: a local copy of your groups, pictures and settings. Deleting the app removes it. The camera is used only when you scan a group's code or take a picture, the photo library only for a photo you choose, and a contact only when you pick one as a participant.
- Notifications: the app registers a push token for your iPhone (Apple Push Notification service, through Firebase Cloud Messaging) with your account as soon as you sign in, whether or not you allow notifications. We use it for silent pushes that keep your groups in sync and, if you allow notifications, for alerts when a payment is added or deleted in a group you share. Turning notifications off in iOS Settings stops the alerts only; the token stays registered. The token is deleted with your account.
- Usage statistics and crash reports only if you agree: the app asks once, on first launch. Until you choose Accept, nothing is sent to Google Analytics or Firebase Crashlytics. If you accept, Google Analytics for Firebase records which screens are opened and these actions: joining a group, creating a group, saving a payment and signing in (with email or Google). Firebase Crashlytics sends crash reports with the stack trace, the device model and the iOS version. We never send a group's identifier, a name, an amount or other group content, and nothing is linked to your account. The app uses no advertising identifier, does not track you across other apps or websites, and Google signals and ad personalisation are off. Google stores an Analytics app instance ID. You can change your choice at any time in the app's Settings; turning it off stops all sending, resets the Analytics app instance ID and discards unsent crash reports.
- Android: the Android app currently sends anonymous usage statistics without asking first, as described above. Only the iPhone app and Spleven Web ask.
